D-Dimer test
The EDELVITAL™ D-Dimer test is a Fluorescent immunoassay performed to assist in ruling out Pulmonary embolism, a stroke or Deep Vein Thrombosis following a long haul flight, or following a prolonged time without exercise or movement.
D-Dimer is a small protein present in the blood after a blood clots degraded by fibrinolysis. It only presents following the activation of the coagulation system as a result of one of the above events. It is therefore, most used to exclude thrombosis but can also be used in the diagnosis of Myocardial infarction ( heart attack) cancer and disseminated intravascular coagulation. It is also very helpful in diagnosing bacteremia in elderly people who exhibit increased concentrations in their blood when infected.
In general a D-Dimer test is a well established reference test used in all hospitals and clinics around the world. This rapid test allows for clinicians to give a quick result, within 15 minutes, in a situation where a diagnosis could be time sensitive to an individual needing urgent care.
